Austin Design Week 2019 Presents: Designing Outside of the Margins: Creating in the Age of Black Girl Magic

Designing Outside of the Margins: Creating in the Age of Black Girl Magic uncovers the complex dialogues related to the intersections of being Black, a woman, and a designer. The event highlights the work of Black women whose aesthetics and common goals challenge Eurocentric methodologies of design, while focusing on identity, afrofuturism, and the resistance of Black women designers. The history of the design world shows the marginalization of Black women designers and despite the setback, their resistance has broadened the definition of design and popularized nontraditional design platforms (i.e.: hair design, nail art designing ). In the event we will discuss how Black women and design establishments can work together to build boundless capacities and “magic” within the design world.

About the Instructor:

Danielle East | Artist

Danielle Demetria East is a visual artist based out of Central Texas but, is currently living in Lubbock, Texas as part of the Charles Adam Studio Project Lubbock Live/Work Studios. She is from La Grange, Texas and is a graduate of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor with a degree in Studio Arts. Her work explores identity, generational pain, and hair politics.
